This is a broad, impressive and showy red that has a layered, inviting and ambitious nose, with black fruits, smoke and toast notes with a charm and swagger that is irresistible. The palate is smooth and lush, but also surprisingly balanced with red cherry notes and a supporting acidity that prevent the oak and alcohol from being overbearing. It is very impressive, approachable and delicious!

And it has a wonderfully aromatic perfume as you might expect from a Syrah that costs far more than this - perhaps it's the Xinomavro that does it?! Open a bottle of this and the room will fill with the nose if this wine. Impressive!

"Greece’s beloved Xinomavro (‘black-sour’) meets fleshy Syrah for a big and broody yet elegant red with black olive, black tea and aged-leather aromas layering over ripe black fruits, drinking rich and spicy with earthy tannins and a dry finish; think bold pairings with beef or aubergine dishes."

Alpha Estate was founded in 1997 by viticulturist Makis Mavridis and wine-maker Angelos Iatridis, who settled in the northwestern region of Amyndeon after years of experience in various locations of Greece and around the world.

In the relatively short time since, the next generations of the two friends' families have come to inherit the work, as daughters Angeliki Iatridou and Emorfili Mavridou carry on the tradition today. The intentions are clear: aspiring to evolve, while participating in the team’s common vision for the innate quality of the region's indigenous grape varieties and its soils.

Decisions made in the vineyard and in the winery are sustainable, organic in practice and as 'natural' as they deem fit. Managing the 220 hectares of vineyard is both challenge and opportunity for the realisation of their goals and the wines attest to this in every bottle. These guys are some of the top wines being made in Greece today.
