This is a stunning Super Tuscan with a reputation of its own. Complex and structured yet totally approachable, it could age for decades and still be identifiable and defiantly Tuscan.
We have VERY limited quantity of this.
Often described as the "second wine" of Sassicaia, Guidalberto is indeed that, but also so much more. The winemakers at Tenuta San Guido never intended for Guidalberto to follow the same path as Sassicaia but rather for it to be an alternative expression of their amazing and unique terroir. It nearly has its own release dates and sales channels such is the demand for both Sassicaia and Guidalberto; yet the familial similarities are useful guides and form an association rather than a hierarchy.
Guidalberto is a fruit forward blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%) producing a more approachable wine-drinking-wise, whilst maintaining the ability to age superbly because of the carefully extracted tannins and natural acidity.
As James Button notes in Decanter, “Guidalberto used to be great value for money, and even though it's a bit pricier these days, the quality has also improved dramatically in recent vintages as Tenuta San Guido seeks to remove the idea of Guidalberto as a ‘second wine’ by building a dedicated winemaking facility and adjusting the blend.” 2022 was a warm vintage and the wine offers the possibility for early drinking, which is exactly what is required because there's no more after this!
