Beautiful Shiraz that boasts the full panoply of varietal flavours without the heaviness of some of this nation's other affects. This is moderate in alcohol, dry, structured and uses oak as a supporting influence rather than allowing it to become the main act. It is svelte, smooth, lush, yet with a mouth-watering tension and enough tannic structure to allow for further short-medium term ageing. Shiraz flavours of plum, black pepper, olive brine and berries.
It's really good wine that happens to be made from Shiraz.
They achieve this through careful handling of the fruit in the winery, a subtle appearance of oak barrels and, possibly most importantly, the harnessing of the weather impacts in the vineyards. Making the most of some cooling Southern Ocean breezes, they are a South Australian appellation which brings the sun in no mean terms. The elegance of this wine is testament to the estate's expertise and skill.
Wynns is an historic Coonawarra estate founded in 1891 by John Riddoch (whose name is on one of their most celebrated wines). It was then rescued from the fate of being turned into a wool-shed in the 1950s and re-named by David Wynn.
Legendary wine writer and wine glass genius, Jancis Robinson, describes it as such, "Every now and then – though perhaps not as often as I’d like – a wine comes along that is obviously and absurdly underpriced".
Closer to home, Matthew Nugent writing in The Sun, says,
"A beauty. A deep red colour, and with aromas of violets, blueberry, and blackcurrant. This soft and smooth Aussie Shiraz has great purity, is nicely structured, with sleek tannins, a note of toasted oak, black pepper, and lashings of ripe black fruit flavours. Again, a lovely lingering finish".
(It's Wynns, in case you hadn't realised.)
We love the wines and are delighted to welcome them into The Allotment as they were one of the ranges we fist fell for back in the early days.
