Mayfly, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2023

This is a really great Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough that busts the myth that you have to spend loads to get good quality. This project began under the watchful eyes of the Glover family based in their Zephyr winery, and now takes most of the fruit from the amazing Dillon's Point subzone. The result is a straight-up, no messing Sauvignon that delivers freshness and typical zingy fruit flavours with lovely balancing richness, making it great for matching with food, too.

New Zealand Sauvignons rewrote the rule book on white wines and those from Marlborough were at the head of the charge; this one is no different with gorgeous tropical, kiwi and green nettle notes on the nose that lead to intense flavours of lime peel, pink grapefruit and lychee.

It is much more subtle than a brick and certainly more enjoyable, but you get what you are looking for and, once in a while, isn't that just great?! We certainly think so and are delighted to be able to offer it to you!

Mayflies live along the clear-water rivers that run through New Zealand's wine regions and are the first thing the multitude of fly-fishers see every season. And with good reason - they are the food of much-loved trout. As the trout are feeding (and then getting caught) the grapes in nearby vineyards ripen and then they too get 'caught' (or picked) - such is the abundance of the earth in some places...

Grown in sustainable vineyards, the grapes for this wine are sheltered by mountains from the westerly rain-showers and are protected from frosts because of their proximity to the sea. Cover crops grown between the vines attract insects away from the grapes as well as sheep, who fertilise the vines throughout the winter months. Nature doing what it does with some careful guidance from the winemaking team!

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
