Poggio San Polo, Rosso di Montalcino 2019

€26.99 €29.99

This is a delicious, mature Rosso that shows the generosity of the vintage's weather, the quality of the winemaking and the benefit of some wonderful ageing, from which anyone who buys this will benefit!

The colour is almost brick-red and tawny-rimmed, with yielding flavours of mature red fruit, currants and spice, that lead to a broad, generous and juicy palate complete with soft tannins and balancing acidity. This is a wine that is going to bless any seriously made food, from rich seafood to game, or even a really good hunk of crusty bread and olive oil.

This eastern-Montalcino estate was established in its current form in 2006 by the winemaking royalty of the Allegrini family from the Veneto. The estate is 22 hectares in size, of which 16 are planted with vines. Of this number, only three hectares are dedicated to Rosso production, the rest going into Brunello. At altitudes of up to 450 metres above sea level, the vineyards benefit from southern, sun-facing exposure as well as cooling influences from high altitude nighttime temperatures.

Certified Organic and Sustainable, the quality that you see in this winery is unquestionable. With a number of different cuvées and single-vineyard sites, this is a winery that, in a very short space of time, has pushed its way tot he top tables of Montalcino recognition, with nervy, structured and generous wines that are both modern and timeless. It's not dissimilar to the story of Allegrini with their Valpolicella expoits, only that those are much longer established. What is so impressive is that these wines in Tuscany are, well, so impressive. The quality is evident in everything that they produce, which is a real hallmark of inherent excellence and well-measured ambition.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
