Vina Real, Barrel Fermented Rioja Blanco

€16.99

This is a stunning wine with complex flavours, engaging texture and a long, balanced and vibrant finish.

Made by one of our favourite wineries in Rioja, this is simply incredible value for money and truly sits in the category of one not to be missed!

In these days when white Burgundy can be eye-wateringly expensive - or just unavailable - this is a breath of fresh air: barrel-fermented with some ageing on lees and bottle stabilisation, it is a conventional, classic, balanced and rewarding wine that will please any of us who miss the value that some French Chardonnay-producing villages used to offer. This is just so good!

Flavours of white orchard fruit, peach and blossom are decorated by subtle vanilla, cashew and some ripe tropical notes. The palate is medium-bodied on account of the lees-ageing and high quality fruit selection. This is a  wine for all occasions - from fine dining at Christmas time all the way through to turning a Thursday night fish pie into a gourmet paradise.

The Vina Real winery building is very new and very modern. It is situated on the top of a hill and is then dug into the hill by at least fifty metres. Grapes arrive at the top of the hill and are hoisted above the crushing tanks, from where the juices flow to the fermenting vessels below and from there to the aging barrels in the caves underground.

Except for the lighting, there is no electricity used in the winemaking process in the entire building - no pumps, no churning, nothing.

This sustainable approach is part of the gentle and elegant style that the winery achieves in its wines and was unique in Rioja when the winery was built (it's now THE template for new wineries in the region!). You'd spot it a mile away if you were in the area: it's high up, big, metal, shiny and red.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
